"A Christmas Song."

A sensitive young music teacher is touched by the request of a young man for the music to a song (which in time is identified as Schubert's famous "Standchen") and also repulsed by the social world offered by her town of Evensford (Bates's first use of this name for a leather-factory town based on his native Rushden).
