A foreword to a limited press edition of a short story by Bates's friend David Garnett.
Dated "Little Chart, 1931," Bates compares Garnett's plots to the meticulously constructed chaffinch nest and praises his writing for its "perfection of balance, its delicacy and grace, its beautiful rhythm, its gay fantasy and brilliance, its attractive combination of simplicity and perky mockery." Specifically praising Garnett's The Sailor's Return and Lady Into Fox, he compares him with both Bach and Defoe.
A holograph manuscript is held at the Cushing Memorial Library, Texas A&M University, USA (https://catalog.library.tamu.e...).
