An 83-year-old veteran of service in India and owner of a mansion now hosting pilots, is fond of a young pilot, but also bewildered by him -- an enthusiasm for flying that seems a disease in contrast to the more business-like detachment of earlier soldiering, by a lack of perspective on his role in a larger military strategy, and by an absence of ethics that the Colonel decries in the "careless and calculated attitude" towards "killing Huns." In the Atlantic Monthly (February 1945) and Britain (April 1945) -- both with the title "Colonel Motley," Life and Letters To-day (August 1945), Colonel Julian and Other Stories (1951), Seven by Five/The Best of H.E. Bates (1963), The Good Corn and Other Stories (1974). Reprinted in The Faber Book of Stories (1960).
