Country Tales: Collected Short Stories

An edition for Readers' Union members, identical to the 1940 Country Tales published by Jonathan Cape except for the later substitution of 'The Captain' for 'The Palace' (due to the lawsuit described under 'The Palace').

In conjunction with the publication, an essay by Bates called 'This is How I Began...' appeared in the October 1938 issue of the Union's publication, Readers' News. In the December issue of the same publication, Bates responded to criticism of the book in a piece called 'Readers, Grow Up!'
