Three children are at play: a boy interested in war games, a young girl who has tired of his domination and wants to fix him a pretend meal, and a newcomer, an older girl mature enough to use her feminine attractions to win her way.
Reminiscent of an earlier story about childhood relations, The Peach-Tree: A Fantasy.
A 1968 film adaptation of the story called "Mirtis ir vysnios medis" was directed by the Lithuanian Arunas Zebriunas. (online movie and synopsis)
In the Evening News (May 15, 1953), The Watercress Girl and Other Stories (1959), A Month by the Lake & Other Stories (1987). Reprinted in Through the Green Woods (1968).
