Bates contributed two of nine essays printed in Apollo between February and December of 1952 (his second essay is "French Painters V — Pissarro and Sisley"). Kenneth Towndrow was responsible for essays 1-3, and Eric Newton contributed essays 6-9.
In this essay, Bates discusses the work of Delacroix (Cross) and Signac, the growth of Impressionism and more particularly Pointillism, and expresses an appreciation of the works reproduced in the article.
In Apollo (May 1952, pp. 135-139, attached).
