An essay that later appeared as part of chapter 2 in A Love of Flowers.

Bates writes of "aristocrats," meaning a plant with the virtue of "being able to stand on its own legs without stakes; of producing flowers for three, four, or perhaps even five months on end; and of showing incontestable grace of form."

In Living (London, February 1968, p. 11, attached).
