Bates reviews Letters from John Galsworthy, 1900-1932 (edited by Edward Garnett) as "a collection of letters which form almost a biography for one man and a perfect testimony to the illuminating sympathy and critical genius of the other." Referring to a "perfect literary friendship," Bates would surely have been reflecting on Garnett's crucial influence, beginning in 1925, on his own literary career and personal life, an influence he would document in his 1950 tribute called simply Edward Garnett. In the London Mercury (December 1934, pp. 182-183).
