A posthumously-published reminiscence, in which Bates reflects on his start as a writer, his reading tastes, and the importance in his work of both imagination and a visual approach to writing.

He discusses in some detail The Triple Echo, "Summer in Salander," and "The Proposal." With three photographs of Bates and family members.
