In The Daily Telegraph (May 25, 1962, attached), Bates is named as the author of an introductory essay to a programme for an Arts Ball that evening at the Folkestone Metropole Arts Centre.
The opening paragraph is quoted as "In England, it used to be said, gardening takes the place of art. It might also have been said, for all I know, that horse racing takes the place of music."
The full introduction is yet to be located.
