Bates pays tribute to his adopted home: the "ceaseless variations" in vegetation, the "bristling air" from the sea, the positive influence of Cockneys visiting each year to pick hops and apples, and the fact that Kent was relatively untouched by the industrial revolution.
Accompanying photographs (some in color) depict rural scenes, activities, and crafts, as well as Bates sitting in his garden.
