In this "intentionally uninformative article," Bates anticipates his many later gardening essays in recollecting childhood garden experiences, praising some of his favourite flowers, extolling the virtues of growing from seed, and advocating "that all gardening should be in essence quite simple, boastless, catholic, unsentimental, a medium of pleasant exercise for the spirit."
