Bates describes a Sunday excursion available to "city dwellers and office prisoners" from Charing Cross to the Kentish countryside where he lives.

He finds "a bit of Scotland, a taste of North country, a glimpse of a German forest, a view as in Somerset — all in a day, and all in country lying on the very doorstep of London."
