An essay that later appeared as part of the chapter 'Mr Pimpkins' in O More Than Happy Countryman.
Bates portrays the jobbing gardener, who is paid to assist in one's garden but who follows his own horticultural ideas, has lax working hours, and indulges his passion for 'settin back' (extreme pruning).
Bates would revisit the character of Mr. Pimpkins in four subsequent essays: 'Union Rustic', 'Face of Summer', and 'The Show' (all printed in The Country of White Clover in 1952) and 'From My Garden — Advice to Those About to Prune' in 1969.
In The Field (London, November 14, 1942, p. 521, attached).
