In this essay, on the centenary of Joseph Conrad's birth, Bates celebrates writing that is 'often complex, persistently compelling, and...burningly sensuous and haunting in atmosphere.'
While acknowledging criticisms of both his writing and his plots, Bates maintains that as a 'teller of tales' Conrad was 'by any standard, a spell-binder.' Bates previously expressed his admiration for Conrad in an essay and a book review, both published in 1936.
