A c.400 page chronicle on the history of the islands, commissioned by the government of the Bahamas in 1950.
The original author was Hilary St. George Saunders, but due to his untimely death in December 1951, the book was completed by Bates in around 1954.
Although a reputed £12,000 was spent on the project by the Bahamian government, it was never published. The original manuscript was deposited at the Bahamas House of Assembly Library. A photostat of the typewritten carbon copy is also available in the Nassau Archives.
In a 1961 letter to The Sunday Times, titled The Dollar Colony, Bates remarks that "...the Bahamas Government, which commissioned the book, is apparently so apprehensive of its candour and accuracy that it declines to allow it to appear..."
