Returning to the very successful Uncle Silas character after ten years, Bates has Silas regaling his young nephew with a typical tall tale, this one involving a buxom landlady and poor grub, a pudding that is "hard as a hog's back" called the Bedfordshire Clanger, and a conclusion in which Silas keeps the landlady warm, "half-starve naked...in her nightshirt" and from then on is "never in want fur the nicest bit o' pudden in the world."
A dramatisation was apparently performed in Manchester, although no date or further information has been discovered.
