He had previously touched upon the subject in one of his Country Life columns for The Spectator ('Skating'. January 3, 1936, p. 16).

Reprinted in the chapter "The Frost" in Down the River (1937). A short extract appeared in 1950 with the title "Exhilarating" in a book called Spice of Life.
