An essay, parts of which later appeared as chapter 11 in A Fountain of Flowers.
Subtitled 'H E Bates follows one of Shell's walks which are part of a Conservation Year effort', Bates writes of the history of the 180-acre Hothfield Common (near his home in Kent), as well as its trees, birds, grasses, and valley bogs.
Bates also wrote about country walks in 'The English Countryside' in 1943 and in 'A Countryman Remembers — Where Once I Walked' in 1973.
