Much in the style of the Uncle Silas tales, but also related to two earlier Bates tales about his boyhood and his grandfather George Lucas ("Alexander" and "The White Pony"), this story depicts the boy, on a fruit-cart with his grandfather, becoming fascinated by an outcast man — a returned criminal, renowned for his athletic prowess.
