The narrator, (named Richardson as in a number of other works), visits a friend in his late eighties who complains that "they're talking of putting me in a wheelchair."

Departing after lunch, he sees "him still standing on the terrace. The spring-soft sunlight of the winter afternoon was bright on his face. He did not lift his hand."
