An essay similar in style to that of four previous essays on gardens published in March and April 1968 by the Daily Telegraph Magazine: "Undersoil Heating for Sub-Tropical Treasures," "Growing 4,400 Alpines in Birmingham," "Conservatory Revived," and "Jungle Rarities in Norfolk."
Each of those four carries the series title "Gardens of Ideas" and a number (1-4), whereas this essay has neither the series title or a number. However, the introduction to the first essay in the series refers to Bates visiting five gardens, so it seems likely that this essay is the intended fifth of the series which, for whatever reasons, was not published in the Spring of 1968 but some six months later. A further commonality of all five essays is the use of the same photographer.
In the Daily Telegraph Magazine (October 8, 1968, pp. 51-52, attached).
