"We Who Now Wait."

A poem in The New Leader Book (1926), accompanied by a woodcut by Claire Leighton.

In 1935, Bates would write a glowing review of Leighton's gardening book Four Hedges.

The second verse is known to have been reprinted with the title 'Reckoning Day' in the Daily Standard (Brisbane, April 23, 1927, p. 4).

The complete poem, when privately printed four years later (Christmas 1930), contained two additional lines and other changes.

Both versions are also reproduced in Give Them Their Life (1990).
