One of three reviews by Bates of England and the Farmer, edited by H.J. Massingham, the others being inThe Spectator, and in Life and Letters To-day.
Bates criticizes the book's rosy picture of the past and notes the bleak social conditions that led to massive migrations from rural to urban areas. It was probably the review in The Spectator, that sparked a contentious interchange with Massingham.
