- Massingham, H.J.
One of three reviews by Bates of England and the Farmer, edited by H.J. Massingham.
Bates criticizes the book's rosy picture of the past and notes the bleak social conditions that led to massive migrations from rural to urban areas. It was probably a review in The Spectator that sparked a contentious interchange with Massingham. A third review appeared in the Journal of the Royal Society of Arts.
In the "Reviews of Books" section of Life and Letters To-day (August 1941, pp. 146-149).
