Of salvias, Bates writes "I myself grow, or have grown, 25 to 30 species, and am always snooping...for more."

He had previously briefly touched upon the subject some 30 years earlier in one of his Country Life columns for The Spectator ('A Splendid Salvia'. February 26, 1937, p. 357).
