Genre
Story Collection
Publisher
Evening Standard

A series of six very short tales published on consecutive days in the Evening Standard (17-22 October 1955), narrated by an Englishman traveling with his wife, and most, if not all, based on people encountered by Bates in his trip to Tahiti in 1954 (The World in Ripeness, pp. 129-146).

Two of the stories deal solely with English people and their life in Tahiti, two focus on native girls, and two treat the interactions between the British and Tahitians.

The stories were The Lotus Land; The Ginger-Lily Girl; Mrs. Eglantine; The Sugar Train; The Laughing Princess; The Coconut Radio. (All but the fourth and fifth stories were included by Bates in later story collections).
