A tale of an illiterate farmer, a woman who brings joy to his life, and a sly farmhand who is threatened by her presence.

A Swedish film adaptation by Svensk Filmindustri called Under Solen (Under the Sun), directed by Colin Nutley, with Rolf Lassgard, Helena Bergstrom, and Johan Widerberg was released in 1998. An adaptation for the television series Country Matters featuring Michael Elphick was aired in January 1973.

The story was also dramatized for BBC Radio by Aileen Mills in 1961 in a production starring Richard Bebb, Barbara Mitchell, June Tobin and William Eedle. Produced by David H. Godfrey.
