The Complete Series available for the first time on DVD in the UK
Adapted from tales by A.E. Coppard and H.E. Bates – two of the great masters of the short story – Country Matters unarguably remains a high point for television drama, winning the award for Best Drama at the 1973 BAFTAs.
Commissioned by Granada TV, Country Matters ran for two series with thirteen 60-minute episodes. Adaptations of H.E. Bates stories include:
- The Mill (filmed in Alport, Derbyshire; starring Rosalind Ayres, Brenda Bruce and Tom Chadbon)
- The Simple Life (filmed in Lancaster; starring Peter Firth, Maggie Fitzgibbon and Robert Urquhart)
- An Aspidistra in Babylon (filmed in St. Margaret's Bay and Dover; starring Jeremy Brett and Carolyn Courage)
- The Ring of Truth (filmed in Todmorden and Marple; starring Prunella Scales, Nicholas Hoye and Cherith Mellor)
- The Four Beauties (featuring Michael Kitchen, Zena Walker and Jan Francis)
- The Little Farm (filmed in Wildboarclough, Cheshire; featuring Michael Elphick)
