Bates had thrice previously touched on the topic — twice in his Country Life columns for The Spectator ('A Fine Plant'. May 3, 1935, p. 733), ('A Fine Verbena'. February 12, 1937, p. 269) and once in a letter to The Sunday Times ('Variety in Verbena'. February 26, 1961, p. 39).
