In response to an earlier article, Bates names what he considers the most beautiful specimens of the Verbena family.
Bates had previously very briefly touched upon the subject in his Country Life columns for The Spectator ('A Fine Plant'. May 3, 1935, p. 733 and 'A Fine Verbena'. February 12, 1937, p. 269). He would return to the topic in more depth in his 'From My Garden' columns for Living ('No Medicine, Much Charm'. September 1970, 4:9).
